Studying musical development in early childhood is one of CMT’s main fields of work. We have supported activities throughout Portugal that have put parents and children in touch with music, creating a dialogue between scientific knowledge, educational practice and artistic creation. In particular, introductory music sessions for parents and babies, and conferences for parents, educators and early years professionals have promoted, among other concepts, the idea that informal educational practices for families offer a “welcome to musical culture” and are intended to “un-school” education. These sessions are based on the results of the Musical Development and Childhood research project, supported by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, with observation sessions taking place at FCSH (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences) at Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
